The false prophet does not seek to abolish religion; instead, he uses religious systems to divert humanity away from the true God. The New Testament outlines several primary ways this influence operates within religious spheres. It is estimated that there are approximately 10,000 distinct religions worldwide. Hinduism: Concentrated heavily in the Indian subcontinent, it has roughly 1.2 billion followers (~15% of the global population) polytheism to monism. The most famous scriptural figure often cited for the number of gods and goddesses is 330 million.
Jesus explicitly warned that "many false prophets will rise up and deceive many" (Matthew 24:11)
The most pervasive impact of Satan's rule in religion is deception wrapped in the appearance of righteousness. We must remain vigilant for the spiritual well-being of the church, for many false prophets have gone out into the world, appearing as wolves in sheep’s clothing. (See I John 4;1 Matthew 7:15)
"An Angel of Light": In 2 Corinthians 11:14–15, the Apostle Paul warns the church that Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. So there should be no surprise that his servants also masquerade as servants of righteousness.
Demon Power: We are told in scripture that the false prophet will use demon power to cause people to worship the beast and to receive the mark. (See Revelation 13:11-18)
The people of the city of Samaria believed that Simon the sorcerer was a great man of God. But in reality he had been using sorcery to bewitch people all alone. (See Acts 8:9-11)
It will be during this time of demonic deception of signs and great wonders will be done whereby God will be testing the hearts of believers. (See Deuteronomy 13:1-13)
The Deception: This means satanic influence in religion rarely looks openly evil. It often manifests as highly moralistic, charismatic, or intellectually appealing teachings that look godly but ultimately reject the core truth of the gospel. We are told in scripture that the level of signs and wonders will be so great that if it were possible the very elect of God would be deceived. (See Matthew 24:24)
The New Testament explicitly attributes certain religious movements and rigid constraints to demonic inspiration. One of the doctrines of the devil is “and ye shall be as gods” the little god doctrine. This doctrine was popularized within the Word of Faith movement (and sections of the Latter Rain and Prosperity Gospel movements). It teaches that because humans were created in the image of God and "everything reproduces after its own kind," born-again believers are not merely human, but are a "class of gods" or "little gods" who possess the divine power to create reality and manifest blessings through the spoken word.
Here are some names of prominent preachers who hold the little god doctrine, Kenneth Copeland, Creflo Dollar, Steven Furtick, Benny Hinn, Paul Crouch, and Joyce Meyer.
Legalism, The Judaizers:
The Galatian churches were primarily made up of Gentile (non-Jewish) converts. Shortly after Paul planted these churches, a group of false teachers known as Judaizers arrived. They argued that to be truly right with God, Gentile believers also had to submit to the Law of Moses. They specifically required circumcision and the keeping of Jewish dietary laws and feast days.
The Black Hebrew Israelites repeat this exact error of the Judaizers, by demanding that salvation require outward, physical markers, such as racial pedigree, specific garments, and legalistic box-checking. They effectively seek perfection through human effort and the flesh, rather than relying entirely on the grace of the Holy Spirit received through faith. (See Galatians 3:1-5)
The Distortion: By replacing God's grace with human rituals, legalism, or extreme self-denial, religious systems can inadvertently trap people in a form of spiritual bondage while making them feel secure in their own piety.
BLINDING MINDS TO THE GOSPEL
Satan acts as a spiritual barrier within religious and philosophical frameworks, preventing people from seeing the truth. “Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.” Colossians 2:8
The "God of this Age": 2 Corinthians 4:4 states that "the god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ."
The Distortion: This rule manifests when religion becomes an intellectual or cultural identity that is completely hostile to the actual message of Jesus. It keeps people busy with religious traditions while keeping them spiritually dead.
DIRECT INFILTRATION (THE "SYNAGOGUE OF SATAN")
In the Book of Revelation, Jesus uses strong language to describe religious institutions that claim to serve God but are actually carrying out the adversary's work. Jesus warned us of the infiltration of Satan into the church with the parable of the wheat and tare. (See Matthew 13:36-43)
Persecution of True Believers: In Revelation 2:9 and 3:9, Jesus references the "synagogue of Satan" those who claim a religious heritage but act as slanderers and persecutors of the true church.
The Distortion: When a religious institution uses its power to oppress, abuse, or kill others in the name of God, it is viewed as a direct earthly manifestation of Satan's rule. “But beware of men; for they will deliver you up to the councils, and they will scourge you in their synagogues” Matthew 10:17
